MANILA – The National Press Club (NPC) has strongly condemned the arrest of veteran journalist and author Philip Lustre Jr., expressing serious concern over the circumstances surrounding his arrest and its implications on due process, press freedom and the protection of journalists.

Lustre was arrested by police officers shortly after attending the Saturday News Forum in Quezon City.

The arrest stemmed from a cyberlibel warrant reportedly issued by a court in Davao City.

According to reports and statements attributed to his legal counsel, Lustre had not been previously informed of the complaint or case that led to the issuance of the warrant.

The NPC stressed in a statement the importance of transparency and the proper observance of legal procedures in the implementation of warrants, while ensuring that the rights of the person concerned are respected.

It said that while it recognizes the authority of the courts and law enforcement agencies to enforce the law, such actions must be carried out in accordance with due process and constitutional safeguards.

The use of cyberlibel provisions against journalists also raises serious concerns about the potential chilling effect on free expression, public-interest reporting and the media’s role in holding those in power accountable.

NPC president Mina Navarro called on authorities to provide a clear and transparent explanation of the circumstances surrounding Lustre’s arrest, and to ensure that his constitutional rights and access to legal remedies are fully respected.

The NPC reiterated that press freedom is a cornerstone of democracy. It said journalists must be able to perform their duties without intimidation or undue pressure, and legal processes must never be used to discourage legitimate journalism or silence critical voices. (PNA)
