Northern Samar unveils new geosites after Biri rocks recognition

Following the recent designation of Biri Rocks as the Philippines’ newest National Geological Monument (NGM), experts have identified over a dozen additional geological sites across Northern Samar province.

The provincial government announced on Thursday that these newly identified geosites are spread across 11 towns, further showcasing the region’s geological and ecological significance.

“These sites, rich in geological and ecological value, are now being considered as potential additions to the country’s list of geological monuments,” said the provincial government in a statement.

Among the highlighted sites are Pinusilan Lagoon and Naputad Rock in Mapanas; Mampugay Falls, Sleeping Lion, and Rakit-dakit 2.0 in Palapag; Lulugayan Falls in Bobon; and Baitan Cave and Rocks in Laoang. Other notable sites include Pinipisakan Falls in Las Navas, Bantayan Tidal Channel and Beach in San Roque, and Imaga Rocks in Allen.

The identification of these geosites follows a week-long exploration conducted by the National Committee on Geological Sciences (NCGS), in collaboration with the Mines and Geosciences Bureau, University of the Philippines–National Institute of Geological Sciences, and the National Museum of the Philippines.

“While the recognition of Biri Rocks is a major achievement, the geological wonders of Northern Samar do not end there. These newly identified sites represent a diverse range of natural formations, from pristine waterfalls to secluded caves and unique rock structures,” the statement added.

In June 2025, Biri Rocks, a collection of seven rock islets with distinctive geological features, was officially recognized as the latest NGM, placing Northern Samar on the map as a geological treasure trove.
