Noel Cabangon headlines benefit concert for the Agtas of Aurora

Music lovers were treated to a night of soulful nostalgia as renowned folk singer-songwriter Noel Cabangon performed at a benefit concert dedicated to supporting the Agta communities of Aurora province.

Held at EDSA Shangri-La in Mandaluyong City, the Awit sa Pag-Ibig at Pag-Asa event aimed to raise awareness and generate funds for education, healthcare, and community development projects for the Agtas.

The Agtas, commonly referred to as Negritos, are among the earliest indigenous peoples of the Philippines, with various tribes scattered across Luzon’s Regions I to V. In Aurora, particularly along its eastern coastline, the Casiguran Dumagat Agta continues to live traditional and subsistence-based lifestyles, largely untouched by the rapid urbanization of the country.

Aurora itself is known for its pristine rainforests, secluded beaches, and surfing culture, yet its indigenous communities remain underserved, often facing neglect, discrimination, and exploitation of their ancestral lands. For decades, the Agtas have endured harassment from outsiders, human rights violations, and lack of access to essential services such as education, healthcare, and livelihood support.

Awit sa Pag-Ibig at Pag-Asa: A concert for a cause

In response to these challenges, Stone of Hope, together with partners Phebie Jame and Artemio Dy, organized Awit sa Pag-Ibig at Pag-Asa as a fundraising initiative to support the Sentrong Paaralan ng mga Agta. The concert seeks to bridge the gap between the indigenous communities and the modern world by securing funding for:

✅ Scholarships and vocational training for Agta youth

✅ Establishment of schools and learning centers

✅ Medical and healthcare facilities, including community clinics

✅ Programs to preserve and protect Agta culture and heritage

Beyond financial support, the concert also aimed to engage the private and public sectors in conservation efforts and encourage broader societal participation in preserving the integrity and traditions of the Agta people.

Indigenous empowerment and cultural preservation

Aside from fundraising, the concert served as a platform to highlight key issues affecting indigenous communities. It promoted:

🎵 Conservation and protection of indigenous culture and heritage

🎵 Collaboration between private and public organizations to uplift indigenous groups

🎵 Awareness campaigns to foster inclusivity and respect for the Agtas

Through music and advocacy, Awit sa Pag-Ibig at Pag-Asa sought to empower the Agta people, ensuring they receive equal opportunities, protection, and recognition in Philippine society. The event was not just about raising funds—it was about inspiring action and building a future where indigenous voices are heard and valued.

With initiatives like this, the journey toward justice, equality, and cultural preservation for the Agtas continues.
