No white flag for Rain or Shine as Guiao sees fight left in E-Painters

ANTIPOLO CITY — Rain or Shine may be one loss away from elimination, but coach Yeng Guiao insists the Elasto Painters are nowhere near surrendering.

Despite falling behind 3-2 in their PBA Season 50 Commissioner’s Cup semifinal showdown against Barangay Ginebra, Guiao believes his squad remains mentally locked in and emotionally prepared for the biggest game of its season.

For the veteran mentor, the scoreboard tells only part of the story.

What matters more is the attitude inside the Rain or Shine locker room.

“We’re still in a good place,” Guiao said after the Elasto Painters absorbed a 111-104 defeat in Game 5 Friday night. “The mood of the team is positive. You can feel that the players still believe we can come back.”

That confidence will be put to the ultimate test Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo, where Rain or Shine faces a win-or-go-home Game 6 against a Ginebra side smelling another Finals appearance.

Yet if there is one thing Guiao has learned throughout his coaching career, it is that belief often matters most when the odds are stacked against you.

The Elasto Painters have built their identity around resilience, and they showed flashes of that toughness even in defeat.

After limiting Ginebra to just 85 points in a convincing Game 4 victory, Rain or Shine struggled to contain the Kings early in Game 5. Justin Brownlee ignited Ginebra’s offense from the opening tip, scoring 13 of his points in the first quarter as the crowd favorites raced to a strong start.

The Kings poured in 31 points in the opening period, forcing Rain or Shine to play catch-up for most of the night.

Still, the Elasto Painters refused to fold.

Led by Adrian Nocum, Rain or Shine mounted a furious comeback in the third quarter. The explosive guard caught fire and scored 15 consecutive points during one stretch, helping slash Ginebra’s lead to just three points at 67-64 and reigniting hopes of stealing the game.

The rally energized the team and reminded everyone why Rain or Shine has become one of the league’s toughest opponents this conference.

Nocum eventually finished with a team-high 25 points while shooting efficiently from the field, but his momentum cooled after a brief rest and he was held scoreless in the decisive fourth quarter.

Even then, Guiao chose to focus on the positives rather than the missed opportunity.

The veteran coach praised the effort and competitiveness displayed by his players against a Ginebra squad that delivered one of its most efficient offensive performances of the series.

“I was happy with the effort,” Guiao said. “You saw how hard our players fought. We faced a team that shot the ball very well, but our guys never stopped competing.”

That mindset may be Rain or Shine’s greatest weapon heading into Game 6.

Unlike many teams facing elimination, the Elasto Painters are not carrying the burden of expectations. The third-seeded squad entered the playoffs as underdogs against the more experienced and star-studded Kings, yet they have pushed the series deep into the semifinals and repeatedly forced Ginebra out of its comfort zone.

Now, with their season hanging in the balance, Rain or Shine is embracing the role it knows best — the team with nothing to lose.

For Guiao, the challenge is no longer tactical. It is about sustaining the belief that has carried the Elasto Painters this far.

The veteran coach sees no signs of panic, frustration, or resignation among his players. Instead, he sees a group that still believes another chapter can be written in this series.

Whether that confidence translates into a Game 6 victory remains to be seen.

But if Rain or Shine has proven anything throughout the conference, it is that counting out a Yeng Guiao-coached team can be a dangerous mistake.

Ginebra may be one win away from the Finals.

Rain or Shine, however, insists its story is far from over.
