After a thrilling season-opening upset of defending champion San Miguel Beer, the NLEX Road Warriors are gunning for a second straight win when they battle the Terrafirma Dyip in the PBA Philippine Cup on Sunday at the Ynares Center in Antipolo.
NLEX escaped with an 85-84 victory last Wednesday behind a gritty, all-around performance that defied the odds even without star guard Robert Bolick, who remains in the United States mourning the passing of his father. Another key player, Javee Mocon, is also listed as doubtful due to illness.
Despite the absences, coach Jong Uichico’s crew is brimming with confidence and cohesion. “Mga player ng NLEX, kahit ano mangyari, lalaban lang sila. Iyon ang importante sa team namin,” said Uichico, praising his players for their effort-driven approach.
The Road Warriors’ balanced attack was anchored by Brandon Ramirez and Jonnel Policarpio, who scored 16 points each, while JB Bahio added a double-double of 12 points and 12 rebounds. “Hustle lang sa depensa at sa rebound. Sipag lang talaga, kasi undersized kami,” Bahio said.
NLEX now faces a Terrafirma squad still searching for rhythm and consistency. The Dyip fell to Blackwater, 107-87, last Friday after a sloppy showing marred by 18 turnovers and a faltering defense.
Jerrick Ahanmisi and Paolo Hernandez provided bright spots on offense, while Mark Louie Sangalang fought through tight coverage to finish with 12 points, eight of them in the final quarter. But the Dyip could not recover after losing momentum early.
Now, they’ll have to regroup fast against an NLEX team riding on momentum and emotional drive. For Uichico and company, another win won’t just mean a share of the early lead—it would also serve as another tribute to Bolick and a statement that the Road Warriors are ready to contend this season.
