Netizens question VP Sara Duterte’s accountability after budget criticism of Marcos

MANILA, Philippines – Vice President Sara Duterte drew criticism from some netizens after calling for President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. to be held accountable over the passage of a national budget that she claimed deviated from the National Expenditure Program (NEP).

In response, social media users raised questions about Duterte’s own accountability, citing controversies involving the confidential funds of the Office of the Vice President (OVP) and Department of Education (DepEd), as well as allegations of unexplained wealth and undeclared or undervalued properties.

Some netizens pointed out that Marcos has not been impeached, while Duterte has faced impeachment proceedings over allegations concerning her finances and conduct in office.

They questioned whether the Vice President was also prepared to address concerns about her assets, sources of wealth, and the use of public funds before demanding accountability from the President.

The online exchange highlighted the continuing political tensions surrounding the proposed national budget and Duterte’s impeachment case.

However, the allegations against Duterte remain contested, and impeachment proceedings do not, by themselves, establish guilt or wrongdoing.

The reactions also renewed public discussion about transparency, responsible government spending, and the accountability of elected officials.
