The National Bureau of Investigation said it would take legal action over a Facebook post that falsely claimed NBI Director Melvin Matibag made negative remarks about the Iglesia ni Cristo and its members.
In a statement Wednesday night, the NBI described the post as part of a disinformation campaign meant to create division and undermine public trust.
The bureau said it was taking steps to identify those behind the alleged coordinated online activity.
It said all legal remedies would be pursued against individuals involved in making and spreading false information.
The NBI denied that Matibag had issued any statement against the INC or its followers.
The bureau said Matibag has maintained respect for the INC community and has upheld professionalism, integrity, and interfaith harmony throughout his career.
It also urged the public to be careful in consuming and sharing social media posts, and to rely only on official statements and verified sources.
The statement came as INC members and supporters continued holding rallies in Quezon City and Manila in support of Sen. Rodante Marcoleta, who faces an impending plunder complaint over an alleged Php 75 million undeclared campaign donation in the 2025 elections.
