NBA officials met with the U.S. House Energy and Commerce Committee on Wednesday to discuss an ongoing gambling and sports betting investigation that led to the arrests of Miami Heat’s Terry Rozier and former Portland coach Chauncey Billups, according to reports from ESPN and The Athletic.
The briefing, conducted by NBA front office staff, took place without lawmakers—who were absent due to the federal government shutdown—and without Commissioner Adam Silver’s attendance.
The congressional committee had earlier requested a formal briefing following the arrests of 34 individuals, including Rozier, Billups, and former NBA player Damon Jones. The league has since placed both Rozier and Billups on administrative leave.
Topics reportedly discussed included the NBA’s partnerships with sportsbooks and safeguards to protect confidential team and game information.
Rozier and Jones were allegedly involved in sharing insider information with bettors, while Billups was accused of organizing poker games manipulated through advanced technology.
