Stephen Curry was named 2025 All-Star Weekend Most Valuable Player.
The 2025 NBA All-Star Weekend introduced a groundbreaking mini-tournament format to rejuvenate the event’s competitive spirit.
Held at San Francisco’s Chase Center, the tournament featured four teams: Shaq’s OGs, Chuck’s Global Stars, Kenny’s Young Stars, and Candace’s Rising Stars. This new structure replaced the traditional single-game format, with each matchup concluding when a team reached 40 points.
In the championship game, Shaq’s OGs, led by Stephen Curry, secured a decisive 41-25 victory over Chuck’s Global Stars. Curry’s performance, highlighted by 12 points and a remarkable half-court shot, earned him the All-Star Game MVP honors on his home court. Reflecting on the weekend, Curry described it as “a celebration of a lot of great things.”
The tournament’s semifinal matchups saw Chuck’s Global Stars defeat Kenny’s Young Stars 41-32, while Shaq’s OGs overcame Candace’s Rising Stars 42-35. Notable performances included Jayson Tatum’s 15 points in the final and Damian Lillard’s pivotal plays throughout the tournament.
Despite the fresh approach, reactions were mixed. Draymond Green criticized the format during a live broadcast, expressing concerns about its impact on player recognition and the inclusion of non-All-Star participants. Conversely, Lillard appreciated the increased competitiveness but reminded fans to view the event as an exhibition.
The NBA’s decision to innovate the All-Star Game format reflects its commitment to enhancing fan engagement and player involvement. As the league evaluates feedback, further adjustments may be considered to balance entertainment value with tradition.
