Mount Maculot to Remain Closed During Holy Week – LGU

The local government of Cuenca, Batangas has announced that Mount Maculot will remain closed to pilgrims, tourists, hikers, and mountaineers during the upcoming Holy Week as officials continue to assess its potential reopening.

According to the Cuenca Tourism Office, consultations are ongoing with experts to determine the feasibility and appropriate timing for reopening the mountain to the public. Since 2020, all activities on Mount Maculot have been prohibited due to a local executive order issued during the COVID-19 pandemic, and it has remained closed ever since.

While the extended closure has led to the natural rehabilitation of the mountain, local authorities stress that any decision to reopen will be made with careful consideration. Mount Maculot, standing at 957 meters above sea level, has long been a favored destination for hikers, climbers, and religious devotees, especially during the Lenten season.

One of its main attractions is a grotto situated along a steep slope, which has historically drawn many pilgrims seeking spiritual reflection during Lent.

The Cuenca government emphasized that they are thoroughly evaluating all factors involved in reopening, including its environmental impact, safety concerns, economic benefits, and public sentiment. Officials aim to strike the right balance between preserving the mountain’s natural state and ensuring accessibility for future visitors.

For now, the Holy Week closure remains in effect, and updates on its potential reopening will be provided once further assessments are completed.
