A proposed expansion of Meralco’s services in Batangas could give businesses greater confidence to invest and households more dependable electricity, as the company seeks to bring additional capital and technology into the province’s power distribution systems.
The Manila Electric Company is proposing investments to upgrade the systems of Batangas electric cooperatives Batelec I and Batelec II, with the aim of reducing recurring brownouts and supporting the province’s economic development.
At a press briefing, Meralco Senior Vice President and Head of Distribution Utility Strategic Partnerships Arnel Casanova said the company hopes to extend the benefits of reliable electricity to more Batangas communities.
He pointed to areas already served by Meralco as examples of how dependable power can support local commerce and development.
“We have seen Meralco’s impact in Batangas, particularly the economic development of Sto. Tomas, Batangas City, and San Pascual. These LGUs are the most progressive because of the reliability of their electricity supply. We want to do the same throughout Batangas,” Casanova said.
The proposal puts distribution improvements at the center of Meralco’s expansion plans. Casanova said additional funding and advanced technology could help strengthen the cooperatives’ services and reduce power interruptions across their coverage areas.
For businesses, fewer interruptions would mean more predictable operations. For households, a stronger distribution network could ease the disruption that frequent brownouts bring to everyday activities.
Casanova, a native of Padre Garcia and a Batelec consumer, said he has experienced those interruptions firsthand, giving him a personal understanding of the need for better service.
Meralco’s existing operations in Batangas and neighboring Laguna, Cavite and Quezon provide a regional foundation for its proposed investment.
Casanova said the company is prepared to participate in public bidding in accordance with the law. Its proposal would allow Batelec I and Batelec II to receive capital infusions and Meralco to invest in system upgrades.
By pairing fresh investment with distribution expertise, Meralco is positioning its proposal as an opportunity to strengthen an essential foundation of Batangas’ growth—reliable electricity.
