The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority (MMDA) on Sunday said continued traffic congestion along Marcos Highway is largely driven by motorists’ and commuters’ lack of discipline.

In a Facebook post, the MMDA said its traffic assessment showed persistent violations of traffic regulations as the main contributor to the worsening traffic situation.

The agency said jeepneys frequently stop to load and unload passengers in undesignated areas, obstructing the flow of vehicles.

It added that passengers waiting on the roadway instead of at designated loading zones further aggravate congestion.

The MMDA also flagged motorists who insist on unsafe or illegal maneuvers, resulting in disorder and slower traffic movement.

To address the problem, the MMDA said it has rolled out various traffic interventions along the highway.

These include the deployment of additional traffic enforcers, installation of more traffic signages, and improved traffic signalization.

The agency said the measures were implemented in coordination with the local government units covering Marcos Highway.

The MMDA also noted that shopping malls along the highway have temporarily suspended mall-wide sales to help ease traffic volume.

Despite these interventions, the agency stressed that sustained improvement depends on discipline and active cooperation from both motorists and commuters.
