The Metropolitan Manila Development Authority asked shopping mall operators to open their parking areas to the public as Luzon braced for the effects of Typhoon Inday.
In a memorandum dated July 9, the MMDA said the request would take effect Thursday evening and remain in place until the typhoon had passed.
MMDA chairperson Don Artes said mall parking facilities across Luzon were being requested for use as temporary overnight parking areas for motorists.
The move was intended to provide safer spaces for vehicles as strong winds and heavy rains were expected in Metro Manila and other provinces due to Inday.
In a separate advisory, the MMDA listed SM Supermalls, Robinsons Malls, Vista Malls, Filinvest Malls, Festival Mall in Alabang, Fora Mall in Tagaytay and Main Square in Bacoor among those offering free overnight parking.
Also included in the list were Westgate, Bloc 10 and South Station, all in Alabang.
The MMDA advised motorists who would use the temporary parking spaces to follow the rules of each mall and monitor official announcements from participating establishments.
Pagasa said in its 11 a.m. bulletin that Inday had slightly weakened while moving northwestward over the Philippine Sea, with Signal No. 2 raised over Batanes and Signal No. 1 hoisted over parts of Northern Luzon and Catanduanes.
