A historic moment awaits martial arts enthusiasts as mixed martial arts (MMA) is officially set to debut at the 2026 Asian Games in Japan, marking a significant milestone for the sport’s growth across Asia. The announcement came from the Olympic Council of Asia (OCA) on Tuesday, signaling MMA’s elevation onto one of the continent’s biggest sporting stages.

The inclusion will see MMA categorized under the broader umbrella of combat sports and feature six competitive events. This move highlights the increasing popularity and legitimacy of MMA within the traditional sports landscape, especially in Asia, where martial arts have deep cultural roots.

The 2026 Games, to be jointly hosted by the city of Nagoya and surrounding Aichi Prefecture, are expected to be the largest edition yet, with an anticipated participation of up to 15,000 athletes—surpassing even the Olympic Games in scale. The event is scheduled to run from September 19 to October 4.

Cricket has also been confirmed as part of the official program. However, questions remain about the sport’s logistical execution, as Aichi currently lacks a dedicated cricket venue. While the format has not been confirmed, it is likely to follow the T20 structure, which was previously featured at the 2023 Asian Games in China and is set for a return to the Olympics in Los Angeles in 2028.

Despite the excitement surrounding the Games, some tension has emerged between the OCA and local organizers. Japanese media recently reported that the OCA had expressed concerns over slow progress in key preparation areas, including athlete accommodations and transportation. These issues prompted formal meetings between the OCA and the local committee this week, aiming to address gaps and align efforts with the host city agreement.

Nevertheless, Aichi Governor Hideaki Omura offered reassurances back in December, stating that the lead-up to the Games was proceeding smoothly. He remains confident that the region will deliver a successful event befitting its status as host of the 20th edition of the Asian Games.

The 2026 Games promise to be a landmark occasion—not only for the debuting MMA athletes but for fans across the continent eager to witness new chapters in Asia’s rich sporting legacy.
