For some music fans, the name Gaynor Sullivan (née Hopkins) may be unfamiliar, but her professional moniker, Bonnie Tyler, instantly rings a bell as the unmistakable voice behind timeless hits such as “It’s a Heartache” and “Total Eclipse of the Heart.”
Known for her distinctive husky voice, Bonnie Tyler was born on June 8, 1951, in Skewen, Glamorgan, Wales, where she grew up never imagining that she would one day achieve international fame as one of rock music’s most recognizable singers.
Tyler rose to prominence with the release of her debut studio album, The World Starts Tonight, in 1977, which featured the hit singles “Lost in France” and “More Than a Lover.” That same year, “It’s a Heartache” became her breakthrough international hit, reaching No. 4 on the UK Singles Chart and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States.
It was during the 1980s that Tyler successfully transitioned into rock music through her collaboration with songwriter and producer Jim Steinman. He penned her signature hit, “Total Eclipse of the Heart,” the lead single from her chart-topping 1983 album Faster Than the Speed of Night. The song has sold more than 13 million copies worldwide and remains one of the most iconic power ballads of all time.
Steinman also wrote several of Tyler’s other major hits, including “Holding Out for a Hero” and “Here She Comes,” while “If You Were a Woman (And I Was a Man)” was written by Desmond Child.
A decade later, Tyler enjoyed renewed success across mainland Europe through her collaboration with Dieter Bohlen, who wrote and produced her hit “Bitterblue.” In 2003, she re-recorded “Total Eclipse of the Heart” with French singer Kareen Anton as the bilingual duet “Si demain… (Turn Around),” which topped the French charts.
She continued recording and performing in the following decades. In 2013, she released Rocks and Honey, featuring the single “Believe in Me,” which she performed while representing the United Kingdom at the Eurovision Song Contest in Malmö, Sweden. She later reunited with producer David Mackay to release Between the Earth and the Stars in 2019 and The Best Is Yet to Come in 2021.
Throughout her career, Tyler has earned three Grammy Award nominations and three Brit Award nominations, including two for British Female Solo Artist. In 2022, she was appointed a Member of the Order of the British Empire (MBE) in the Queen’s Birthday Honours for her services to music.
Her signature hits, “Total Eclipse of the Heart” and “It’s a Heartache,” have each sold more than six million copies worldwide and remain among the best-selling singles of all time.
As a tribute to the Welsh singer, I fondly recall how, during gatherings with friends, our dear friend Josephine “Phen” Campos would lovingly perform Bonnie Tyler’s songs, recreating the same unmistakable husky voice that made her a global music icon.
