CANDON CITY — Time may have taken them away from the daily grind of the professional game, but the competitive spirit remains as fierce as ever for PBA legends Willie Miller and Ranidel de Ocampo.

Years after stepping away from the league, the two former stars are embracing the rare opportunity to lace up once again for the PBA’s milestone Season 50 All-Star Weekend, rekindling the energy and nostalgia of one of the league’s most celebrated traditions.

Miller, a two-time Most Valuable Player and nine-time All-Star during his decorated career, will team up with fellow veterans Arwind Santos, De Ocampo, and Marc Pingris to bolster the league’s young talents in the Rookie-Sophomore-Junior “blitz game” scheduled Friday at the Candon Arena.

The exhibition matchup will feature Miller and Santos joining the league’s freshmen and second-year players as they face the third-year squad reinforced by De Ocampo and Pingris, creating a compelling mix of experience and youthful energy on the court.

For the 48-year-old Miller, the return to All-Star action is as much about competition as it is about fun.

“Matanda ka o hindi, ayaw mo patalo,” Miller said with a grin. “Hopefully, wala kami ma-pull (na muscles).”

Despite the lighthearted tone, Miller believes the younger generation will bring the same level of intensity once the game begins.

“Pinag-uusapan nga namin ni Ranidel, medyo mahiyain ‘yung mga bata ngayon, hindi masyadong nangungulit. Pero alam natin pagdating sa laro iba, eh,” he said.

“Kahit naman kami noon, medyo fun kami when it came to interviews at ‘yung ibang mga events (during the All Star Weekend) pero pagdating sa court, nagpaplano na kami na bawal panalunin ‘yung kabilang team.”

He added that beneath the festive atmosphere of the All-Star celebration lies the unmistakable competitive edge that defines Filipino basketball culture.

“Ganon parati ‘yan. When it comes sa basketball competitive pa rin ‘yan, it’s fun basketball pero Pilipino tayo, ayaw nating patalo. So pagdating ng jumpball, iba na agad yung mentality.”

For De Ocampo, however, the All-Star festivities represent more than just the game itself. The former San Miguel and TNT standout said what he misses most is the unique opportunity to connect with fans in the communities hosting the event.

“Bukod sa game na very competitive, ang isa pa na-eenjoy ko is ‘yung pagpunta namin sa mga lugar, sa school, sa mga community, ‘yung makihalubilo sa mga tao,” De Ocampo shared.

“Iyun ang pinaka-namiss ko kasi gustong gusto kong nakikita na masasaya ang mga tao, nagpapa-picture, nakikipag-usap, at masaya sila kasi andun kami.”

As the PBA celebrates its golden season, the presence of legends like Miller and De Ocampo adds a nostalgic layer to the festivities—reminding fans that while generations of players may come and go, the passion for the game remains timeless.
