TACLOBAN CITY – The Philippine Army launched focused military operations in San Jose de Buan, Samar, after residents reported armed men allegedly demanding food and money, leading to two separate encounters with suspected New People’s Army members.
The Army’s 801st Infantry Brigade under the 8th Infantry Division said troops moved into the area on Sunday after receiving information about the presence of armed individuals.
The military has not yet released details on possible casualties or other results of the encounters.
Col. Marlo Jomalesa, acting commander of the 801st Infantry Brigade, said information from residents helped troops respond quickly to the reported threat.
“The information shared by our community partner proved vital in this operation. It allowed our troops to respond swiftly and decisively,” Jomalesa said.
The 8th Infantry Division said operations against remaining NPA elements in Samar would continue. Residents in affected areas were advised to limit unnecessary movement to avoid being caught in possible crossfire.
San Jose de Buan Mayor Christal Jean Elizalde also urged residents to remain calm, follow safety precautions, and cooperate with authorities while security operations are ongoing.
She said the municipal government is coordinating with the Army and local officials to help maintain peace and protect communities.
Authorities also encouraged residents and barangay officials to report sightings or movements of armed groups.
The Army renewed its appeal for remaining rebels to surrender, saying qualified individuals may receive financial, livelihood, and reintegration assistance under the Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
