Meta announced on Wednesday that it is close to resolving a technical issue that has caused a widespread outage affecting its Facebook, Instagram, and WhatsApp apps.
“We’re aware that a technical issue is impacting some users’ ability to access our apps. We’re working to get things back to normal as quickly as possible and apologize for any inconvenience,” Meta Newsroom said on X on Wednesday.
Both WhatsApp and Instagram confirmed the outages on X, with many users reporting difficulties accessing Meta’s apps.
The outage, which lasted over three hours, saw Meta posting around 5:30 p.m. EST that it was “99% of the way there” to fully resolving the issue.
According to outage tracking site Downdetector, Instagram had logged nearly 70,000 reports by mid-afternoon Wednesday.
Facebook recorded up to 105,000 outage reports, while Facebook Messenger saw approximately 14,000, and WhatsApp around 12,500.
Threads, Meta’s competitor to X, also experienced an uptick in outage reports.
Since Downdetector relies on self-reporting, the site said it may not fully represent the extent of the issues.
