Meralco’s Liwanag Park: A Christmas tradition that shines in the hearts of Filipinos

For many Filipinos, the Christmas season would not be complete without a visit to Meralco’s Liwanag Park — an annual tradition that has grown into one of the most beloved and must-see holiday destinations in the country. Year after year, families, friends, and travelers flock to Ortigas to feel the familiar glow of lights that evoke joy, peace, and a deep sense of nostalgia.

What began as a corporate Christmas initiative has long become part of the Filipino holiday story: a place where memories are made, where the magic of the season feels timeless, and where every visit feels like coming home.

This 2025, the Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company continues its cherished legacy through its flagship campaign, Maliwanag ang Pasko, carrying the theme A Brighter Christmas for All.

More than an exhibition of lights, the initiative remains a symbol of hope and togetherness — a reminder that the Filipino Christmas shines brightest when shared with community, heritage, and compassion.

At the heart of the celebration is Liwanag Park in Meralco’s Ortigas compound, open nightly until December 31. It features immersive zones that journey through the past, present, and future: nostalgic scenes inspired by old Filipino parks and homes; dazzling light tunnels and pedal-powered displays that reflect the country’s modern energy landscape; and a whimsical, interactive garden that imagines a brighter, more sustainable tomorrow.

True to Meralco’s advocacy, many installations are crafted from repurposed materials — used meter covers, copper wires, and LED fixtures transformed into artistic, energy-efficient creations. Visitors are also treated to a captivating 3D mapping show that brings the Lopez Building to life through Panasonic technology.

And, as in years past, the iconic tranvia returns, inviting children and adults to relive Manila’s old-world charm before indulging in traditional Christmas treats like bibingka and puto bumbong.

Beyond Ortigas, Meralco extends the holiday experience to the historic city of Intramuros through the Liwanag Park at Plaza Roma, a collaboration with One Meralco Foundation (OMF) and the Intramuros Administration.

Open until January 4, 2026, this installation marries heritage and innovation — from a 20-foot Christmas tree built with recycled meter covers and steel crossarms to a tranvia replica crafted from reclaimed wood, echoing Meralco’s roots in Manila’s early transportation history.

The switch-on ceremony gathered leaders from OMF, the Intramuros Administration, the Department of Tourism, and Meralco, reinforcing the initiative’s dual purpose: to celebrate culture while promoting environmental responsibility.

Meralco also brought the season’s warmth to Batangas, where OMF partnered with the Archdiocese of Lipa to illuminate the Metropolitan Cathedral of San Sebastian and distribute solar streetlamps across various parishes.

Solar lighting units and noche buena packages for indigent families were also handed over during the ceremonial lighting led by Meralco and Church officials, underscoring the foundation’s mission to improve energy access and uplift communities.

Through these displays and outreach efforts, Maliwanag ang Pasko continues to embody the spirit of Filipino Christmas — resilient, generous, and full of light.

What began as a yearly showcase has become a treasured tradition, a destination of comfort and celebration, and a reminder that Christmas in the Philippines is not just seen in bright lights but felt deeply in shared experiences, kindness, and hope for a brighter future for all.
