The Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has restored electricity service to nearly all customers affected by outages caused by heavy rains and strong winds from the intensified southwest monsoon (Habagat) enhanced by Super Typhoon Nando (international name: Ragasa).
“Our crews continue to work round the clock, and we will not stop until power is fully restored to all affected customers,” said Joe R. Zaldarriaga, Meralco Vice President and Head of Corporate Communications.
As of 7:00 a.m., only around 1,700 customers remain without electricity, mostly in parts of Bulacan, Metro Manila, Batangas, and Cavite. Full restoration is underway as crews continue “mopping up operations.”
Meralco is also maintaining heightened alert in preparation for the possible effects of Tropical Storm Opong, which may again enhance monsoon rains. To mitigate risks, the company has activated contingency measures, including advisories to billboard operators to temporarily roll up their tarpaulins to prevent accidents caused by strong winds.
“We are closely monitoring weather developments and ensuring the readiness of our personnel and facilities. We strongly remind the public to prioritize electrical safety, especially in areas prone to flooding,” Zaldarriaga added.
Meralco reminded households to observe these key safety measures during floods:
- Keep the main power switch or circuit breaker turned off.
- Never touch appliances or outlets with wet hands.
- Unplug appliances and turn off permanently connected equipment; remove light bulbs if possible.
- Wear rubber gloves and rubber-soled shoes when cleaning mud or debris from electrical equipment.
- Ensure outlets, wires, and devices are completely dry before use.
- Have a licensed electrician check appliances and wiring systems before switching them on.
- Avoid using flood-damaged electrical equipment.
Customers may report power outages and other service concerns through Meralco’s official Facebook page (facebook.com/meralco), Twitter account (@meralco), via text at 0920-9716211 or 0917-5516211, or by calling the Meralco Hotline at 16211.
