Meralco moves to shield consumers from global energy shocks amid Middle East tensions

Statement from Meralco's Executive VP and COO regarding measures to protect customers from geopolitical tensions in the Middle East affecting fuel markets.

As geopolitical tensions in the Middle East continue to raise concerns about possible disruptions in global fuel markets, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco) has stepped up proactive measures to protect Filipino consumers from potential supply instability and spikes in electricity prices.

Ronnie L. Aperoche, Meralco Executive Vice President and Chief Operating Officer, said the company is closely coordinating with its power suppliers to ensure that generation costs remain at least-cost levels while maintaining the reliability of the power system that serves millions of customers.

“Amid heightened geopolitical tensions in the Middle East and the potential ripple effects on global fuel markets, Meralco is proactively implementing all necessary measures to shield our customers from possible supply disruptions and upward pressure on electricity prices,” Aperoche said.

A key part of Meralco’s strategy is optimizing its energy mix by maximizing cost-efficient sources of electricity across available technologies. At the same time, the company is carefully managing its exposure to the Wholesale Electricity Spot Market (WESM), where electricity prices tend to fluctuate more sharply, while actively securing lower-cost replacement power when needed.

These efforts align with the directive of Meralco Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Manuel V. Pangilinan to undertake a comprehensive reassessment of the company’s fuel sourcing and supply strategy in light of global uncertainties. As a major participant in both power distribution and generation, Meralco said it is prepared to play a key role in helping stabilize energy supply in the country.

Beyond supply management, the company is also reinforcing broader demand-side initiatives to help ensure that available power resources are used efficiently. Meralco reiterated its support for the national government’s call to strengthen energy efficiency across all sectors, particularly among large commercial and industrial customers.

The utility continues to provide technical guidance and operational support to help businesses improve energy efficiency within their facilities.

It is also encouraging greater participation in the Interruptible Load Program (ILP), a voluntary scheme that allows large power users to temporarily switch to their own generator sets during periods of supply constraints, helping prevent grid overload and maintain stability.

Meralco is also intensifying its outreach to residential consumers by promoting simple and practical ways to manage household electricity consumption. The company emphasized the continued implementation of the Lifeline Rate Subsidy Program, which provides electricity discounts to low-income households consuming 100 kilowatt-hours or less per month.

To make the subsidy more accessible, Meralco has automatically registered eligible households whose records match beneficiaries of the Department of Social Welfare and Development’s Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program (4Ps). The company is also encouraging other qualified customers to apply so they can fully benefit from the program.

Internally, Meralco said it is reinforcing a culture of responsible energy use within its own operations. This includes improving operational efficiencies, optimizing fleet management, complying with energy efficiency and conservation standards, and conducting continuous energy audits across its facilities.

Aperoche said these combined efforts reflect Meralco’s commitment to safeguarding energy reliability for its customers despite uncertainties in global energy markets.

“We remain fully committed to facing these uncertainties with care and foresight so Meralco can continue providing reliable power and supporting our customers through these challenging times,” he said.
