The Manila Electric Company (Meralco), under Manuel V. Pangilinan’s leadership, continues to shine on the regional stage, once again earning high praise for its commitment to sustainability governance and transparent reporting.

In its 2023 Combined Annual and Sustainability Report titled “Pangako”—a Filipino word meaning “promise”—Meralco showcases not only its achievements but also its unwavering dedication to sustainability, stakeholder engagement, and adherence to global best practices. The report has garnered two major accolades, reinforcing Meralco’s position as a trailblazer in corporate responsibility.

At the 10th Asia Sustainability Reporting Awards (ASRA), Pangako was honored with the Silver Award in Asia’s Best Sustainability Report—Governance category. This recognition placed Meralco among the top contenders from 13 countries, praised for its exemplary disclosure quality, strong alignment with international standards, and leadership in addressing sustainability impacts, risks, and opportunities.

In addition, Meralco achieved a Bronze Rank at the Asia Sustainability Reporting Rating (ASRRAT) 2024—its fifth consecutive citation from the prestigious platform. The award celebrates Meralco’s consistent excellence in communicating its environmental, social, and governance (ESG) performance, a key driver in building long-term stakeholder trust.

“Transparent sustainability reporting is a cornerstone of Meralco’s commitment to ESG excellence,
fostering trust with our stakeholders and enabling informed strategy development and decision
making. By articulating and sharing our sustainability performance and impact, we aim to further
drive transformative and meaningful change within our organization and beyond,” said Meralco first
vice president and chief sustainability officer Raymond B. Ravelo.

More than a corporate document, Pangako provides a holistic view of Meralco’s journey—highlighting milestones in ESG performance alongside financial and operational metrics. It underscores the company’s firm belief that sustainability and business success go hand in hand.

Founded in 2015, ASRA is widely regarded as one of Asia’s premier forums for recognizing excellence in sustainability reporting. ASRRAT, organized by the National Center for Corporate Reporting, evaluates reports based on criteria such as greenhouse gas emissions disclosure, energy consumption, and alignment with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Meralco’s sustainability framework, “Powering the Good Life,” introduced in 2019, is built on four pillars—Power, Planet, People, and Prosperity. This strategy continues to guide the company’s mission to deliver inclusive and sustainable progress across all sectors it touches.

As global expectations for corporate accountability grow, Meralco’s leadership in ESG reporting sets a benchmark not only for the energy sector but also for responsible businesses across Asia.
