MERALCO ENSURES SEAMLESS INTEGRATION OF DISTRIBUTED ENERGY RESOURCES. As part of its commitment to take the lead in the country’s energy transition, Manuel V. Pangilinan-led Manila Electric Company (Meralco) is investing heavily to upgrade its distribution network to enable the seamless integration of renewable energy for a smarter, safer power grid.

At the Berde Renewables Collaboration Summit 2025, Meralco made one thing clear: the future of energy is no longer a one-way street.

“The way power flows is changing,” said Froilan J. Savet, Meralco First Vice President and Head of Networks. “We’ve moved from a centralized setup to a dynamic, multi-directional energy system—thanks to the rise of solar rooftops, electric vehicles, batteries, and microgrids.”

This transformation, Savet emphasized, makes the role of distribution utilities more crucial than ever. As homes and businesses begin to generate and store their own power, companies like Meralco must ensure that the grid remains stable, reliable, and resilient.

To meet this challenge head-on, Meralco is rolling out an ambitious grid modernization program—designed to seamlessly integrate Distributed Energy Resources (DERs) into its network.

“We’re not just delivering electricity anymore,” Savet explained. “We’re building a cleaner, smarter, and more flexible energy system. One that can support the growing demand for renewables and respond quickly to changes in the energy landscape.”

At the heart of Meralco’s modernization strategy is the 4-I Framework: Integration, Innovation, Intelligence, and Interoperability.

  • Integration ensures every new energy source—whether it’s a solar panel or a home battery—strengthens rather than strains the grid.
  • Innovation focuses on cutting-edge solutions like battery storage, grid-forming inverters, and microgrids to future-proof the network.
  • Intelligence brings in AI and digital technologies, allowing Meralco to monitor and manage the grid in real time with precision forecasting and rapid response.
  • Interoperability guarantees that all these diverse technologies work together seamlessly and securely through standardization and enhanced cybersecurity.

But it’s not just about technology. Meralco is also investing in its people—upskilling its workforce to handle the complexities of a modern grid—and collaborating closely with regulators to stay aligned with national energy goals.

“The energy transition isn’t a distant vision. It’s happening now,” Savet said. “The real test for utilities is how fast we can adapt without compromising reliability. At Meralco, we’re not just preparing for the future—we’re powering it.”
