In a move that underscores the power of collaboration in nation-building, the Manila Electric Company (Meralco), under the leadership of business titan Manuel V. Pangilinan, has partnered with the Armed Forces of the Philippines Reserve Command (AFPRESCOM) to strengthen disaster preparedness and energy resiliency for the Filipino people.
Through the signing of a landmark Memorandum of Agreement (MOA), Meralco and AFPRESCOM are establishing the Meralco AFP Affiliated Reserve Unit—a unique synergy between civilian expertise and military discipline. This partnership is not just about bolstering national defense; it’s about delivering real, tangible benefits to the people, especially during times of crisis.
“This only means that the task of handling or addressing the national security issues of our country is not only in the hands of a few, but is a shared responsibility by all,” BGen. Ferdinand Geminic P. Ramirez, commander of the AFPRESCOM, said during the signing of the agreement.
By tapping into Meralco’s deep technical knowledge in power distribution and infrastructure, the AFP gains critical support in energizing key facilities and maintaining essential services during emergencies. This collaboration enhances the government’s ability to respond swiftly and effectively to natural disasters and manmade threats—ultimately protecting lives, preserving public order, and ensuring that power remains available when communities need it most.
The Department of Energy echoed this sentiment. DOE Undersecretary and military reservist Felix William Fuentebella hailed the partnership as a model of proactive energy security, applauding Meralco’s commitment to public service.
Under the agreement, Meralco employees are encouraged to volunteer as military reservists. These volunteers will play a crucial role in safeguarding the country’s power infrastructure, participating in emergency response drills, and supporting national recovery efforts—all while continuing their professional careers.
“This partnership is about ensuring energy resilience, whether in times of natural calamities or manmade challenges,” Meralco first vice president and head of networks Froilan J. Savet said.
More than a corporate initiative, this collaboration empowers Meralco employees to become active contributors to national security and public welfare. It creates a new avenue for civic engagement and patriotism, reinforcing the idea that safeguarding the nation is a duty to every Filipino.
“Through this partnership, we can elevate Meralco’s emergency preparedness and disaster response capabilities. Rest assured that Meralco will not only keep the lights on, we stand ready to support the AFP and the Filipino people whenever we are needed,” Meralco executive vice president and chief operating officer Ronnie L. Aperocho said.
As a long-standing government partner and advocate of public safety, Meralco continues to prove that corporate leadership can and should go hand-in-hand with national service. This partnership with AFPRESCOM is a shining example of how public-private collaboration can directly benefit the Filipino people—ensuring stronger, safer, and more resilient communities nationwide.
