Mental health hotline gets nearly 1K calls during holiday season

Nearly 1,000 individuals reached out to the National Center for Mental Health (NCMH) crisis hotline during the recent holiday season, the Department of Health (DOH) reported Saturday.

According to latest data from the DOH, the hotline recorded a total of 961 calls between December 21, 2025, and January 2, 2026. The department noted that the volume of calls reached its peak on December 30.

The primary concerns raised by callers included symptoms of anxiety and depression, as well as issues regarding romantic relationships.

The NCMH had previously observed that call volumes often surge during the holidays, a period when many experience heightened feelings of loneliness or sadness.

Earlier in the season, Health Secretary Teodoro Herbosa urged the public to remain “sensitive and considerate,” noting that while many celebrate, others may be quietly struggling with mental health challenges.

The DOH confirmed that its monitoring and surveillance will continue through January 5.

The NCMH crisis hotlines remain operational 24/7 to provide free psychological first aid and mental health consultations.

Individuals seeking support can reach the NCMH via the following numbers:

• 1553 (Toll-free nationwide landline)

• 0919-057-1553 (Smart/TNT)

• 0917-899-8727 (Globe/TM)
