President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Thursday administered the oath of office to new National Privacy Commission (NPC) Commissioner Atty. Johann Carlos Barcena.

Barcena took his oath during a ceremony in Malacañang.

He previously served as executive director at the Office of the Commissioner under the Governance Commission for Government-Owned and Controlled Corporations.

The NPC welcomed Barcena’s appointment in a post on its official Facebook page.

The commission said it looks forward to his leadership in strengthening data protection in the country.

It added that Barcena is expected to help promote a safer and more trusted digital environment for Filipinos.

Barcena replaces Atty. John Henry Naga, who had served as NPC commissioner since 2021.

Naga’s term saw the commission handle key data privacy issues, including cyber incidents affecting public and private institutions.

Barcena is expected to continue efforts to improve compliance with data protection standards.
