President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. called for greater cooperation among Southeast Asian nations in developing artificial intelligence (AI), emphasizing the need to strengthen regional digital integration and competitiveness.

Speaking at the 24th Forbes Global CEO Conference in Singapore on Thursday, Marcos said the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) should take a more active role in advancing AI technologies and establishing a unified digital market.

“ASEAN is not talking enough about AI,” Marcos said.

As ASEAN chair for 2026, Marcos emphasized the importance of developing a regional strategy that would allow member states to collaborate on emerging technologies while remaining competitive in the global digital economy.

“As we chair ASEAN this year, we need to put together a plan for AI – what are the things we can do to help others and how we can compete in a constructive way,” he said.

The President also highlighted the upcoming signing of the ASEAN Digital Economy Framework Agreement (DEFA), a landmark regional pact aimed at simplifying cross-border digital transactions and harmonizing digital regulations.

The agreement is scheduled for signing in November during the 49th ASEAN Summit and Related Summits in Manila, following the conclusion of negotiations in May.

DEFA is expected to become ASEAN’s first region-wide, binding digital economy agreement, establishing common rules for digital trade, cross-border e-commerce, cybersecurity, artificial intelligence, electronic payments and personal data protection.

Marcos said the framework would help improve digital connectivity and interoperability among ASEAN member states, allowing businesses and consumers to participate more easily in the regional digital economy.

The agreement is also expected to support ASEAN’s efforts to unlock its digital economy potential, estimated to reach USD2 trillion by 2030.

The President underscored the importance of regional cooperation in ensuring that Southeast Asian countries benefit from rapid technological advancements.

Through DEFA and stronger AI cooperation, ASEAN aims to create a more integrated digital market, expand economic opportunities and strengthen the region’s position in the global technology sector.
