Marcos seeks lasting peace as Ukraine war marks 1,000th day

President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. on Wednesday expressed hope for a “comprehensive, just and lasting peace” in Ukraine as the war with Russia reached its 1,000th day.

In a statement shared on his official X account, Marcos underscored Ukraine’s importance to the Philippines, describing it as a “valued partner” and noting that the bilateral relationship “continues to go from strength to strength.”

Marcos also reflected on his productive meeting with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy in June, during which he reiterated the Philippines’ unwavering support for Ukraine’s sovereignty, independence, unity, and territorial integrity.

Zelenskyy visited Manila on June 3 and met with Marcos at Malacañan Palace, where he expressed gratitude for the Philippines’ steadfast backing and recognition of Ukraine’s sovereignty.

Since the war began over two years ago, the Philippines has consistently supported Ukraine, voting in favor of all six resolutions passed by the UN General Assembly Emergency Special Session addressing the crisis. The Philippines has reaffirmed its commitment to Ukraine’s territorial integrity and sovereignty.

Marcos and Zelenskyy also vowed to strengthen the 32-year-old diplomatic ties between their nations, which were formally established on April 7, 1992.
