President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday committed continued government support for thousands of families displaced by the massive fire that hit Parola Compound in Binondo, Manila, over the weekend, assuring that assistance would remain until recovery is completed.
He made the assurance after visiting the Delpan Sports Complex and nearby evacuation center, which were temporarily housing residents affected by the blaze.
During the visit, the President also led the distribution of Php 10,000 in cash aid, along with food packs and hygiene kits, to affected families.
He said in Filipino that government assistance would not be short-term, noting that authorities would keep delivering food and essential supplies as they processed the evacuees’ needs and documentation.
Marcos also said the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development would provide construction materials to help fire victims rebuild their damaged homes.
He further assured evacuees that agencies, including the Department of Social Welfare and Development and the City of Manila, would continue coordinating relief operations until residents could safely return to normal living conditions.
He also noted additional support from the National Housing Authority (NHA), which would give each affected family Php 30,000 intended for home reconstruction assistance.
The fire broke out in the afternoon and rapidly spread through the densely packed community, prompting a high-level response that escalated to Task Force Charlie before it was eventually put out after more than ten hours.
