President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reiterated the government’s commitment to youth development through sports as he led the opening ceremony of the 2026 Cagayan Provincial Athletic Association (CPAA) Meet in Camalaniugan on January 8.
Addressing student-athletes from across the province, the President underscored the value of sports as a powerful tool in shaping character, saying there is “no downside” to encouraging young people to stay active and competitive. He urged participants to give their best in every event while upholding the spirit of sportsmanship.
Marcos said sports provide an ideal training ground for developing resilience, discipline, and teamwork—qualities that extend far beyond the playing field. He noted that the habits and lessons learned through athletic competition can help guide young athletes as they pursue their future goals in school and in life.
The President also highlighted the government’s move to strengthen grassroots sports development by reintegrating sports administration into the Department of Education, a step he said would further empower student-athletes and reinforce the role of schools in nurturing athletic talent.
Running from January 7 to 10, the CPAA Meet gathers delegations from 28 municipalities across Cagayan, with Camalaniugan hosting this year’s edition. The annual competition is organized by the DepEd Schools Division Office of Cagayan, with support from the Camalaniugan local government unit and the Cagayan Provincial Government.
Beyond celebrating athletic excellence, the CPAA Meet also serves as a key selection platform for athletes who will represent the province in the Cagayan Valley Regional Athletic Association Meet scheduled for April 2026.
