President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. inaugurated the Camalaniugan Bridge in Alcala, Cagayan on Thursday, commending the Department of Public Works and Highways for completing the project despite multiple challenges.
The bridge directly connects the towns of Camalaniugan and Aparri, providing a vital alternative route across the Cagayan River in the province’s northern region.
Marcos said the project could serve as a model for other bridge constructions nationwide. “I congratulate the Public Works for their very good work here and to see that everything was completed on time and on budget,” he said.
At 1,580 meters in total length, the bridge consists of a 480-meter cable-stayed main span and 1,100 meters of approach bridges, offering a modern and reliable link between the two towns.
Despite issues faced by the agency, the President noted that work continued steadily until completion. “Patuloy pa rin ang kanilang naging trabaho at kaya naman, nakarating na ang araw na ito na binuksan natin ang Camalaniugan Bridge,” he added.
Marcos highlighted the bridge’s potential to boost local economies and generate employment in Cagayan province, emphasizing the infrastructure’s role in spurring growth.
The project also provides an alternative to the Magapit Suspension Bridge, previously the only major crossing over the Cagayan River in the northern part of the province.
Officials said the completion of Camalaniugan Bridge represents a significant upgrade to the region’s transport network, improving connectivity and access for residents, travelers, and businesses.
