President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday said work on a pumping station linked to a flood control effort in Quezon City could start by late this year or early next year.

The President made the remark after inspecting ongoing drainage upgrades along E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue, part of a broader project covering G. Araneta Avenue, an area known for frequent flooding during rains.

He was joined by Public Works Secretary Vince Dizon as they checked pipe-laying activities, which were nearing completion and expected to be finished within the week.

Marcos said the planned pumping station would address long standing flooding problems in the area, noting that even moderate rainfall often leads to water buildup.

He added that the initial facility would be temporary, with a more permanent structure to be constructed later near the San Juan River to improve long term flood management.

The drainage project spans 758 meters from Kaliraya Street to E. Rodriguez Sr. Avenue and involves installing two large high density polyethylene pipes beneath the road.

These new pipes are designed to complement an existing smaller drainage line and boost the system’s capacity to move water more efficiently during heavy downpours.

Funded at nearly P500 million under the 2024 budget, the project started in March 2025 and was already close to completion as of mid May, with authorities aiming to finish it within the month.
