MANILA, Philippines – President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. is closely monitoring the massive three-day demonstration organized by the Iglesia ni Cristo (INC) religious group, which commenced Sunday at Rizal Park in Manila.
The demonstration, which is scheduled to run until November 18, is being held to press for institutional reforms. Presidential Communications Office (PCO) Acting Secretary Dave Gomez confirmed that the President is following the developments.
“Yes, the President is monitoring today,” Gomez told reporters as thousands of INC members and supporters began their protests.
The peaceful assembly, called the “Rally for Transparency, Accountability, Justice, and Peace,” had already drawn 27,000 participants as of 11 a.m. Sunday, according to the Manila City government. Organizers indicated that the crowd was expected to swell leading to the 4 p.m. program at the Quirino Grandstand.
The INC rally comes as government agencies are investigating alleged multibillion-peso irregularities in flood-control projects, and as other groups held separate rallies at the EDSA People Power Monument in Quezon City.
