MANILA – Manila Water is maximizing the output of its Cardona Water Treatment Plant (WTP) in Rizal to help maintain water supply for about 800,000 residents ahead of a very strong El Niño that is forecast to persist through the first half of 2027.
In a news release Monday, Manila Water said the facility, which draws water from the Laguna Lake, has a production capacity of 100 million liters per day (MLD), which can reach 110 MLD when raw water quality conditions permit.
“Preparing for climate challenges requires maximizing every available source of water,” Dittie Galang, head of Manila Water Communication Affairs Group, said.
“The Cardona Water Treatment Plant plays a vital role in our preparations for the looming strong El Niño by providing additional operational flexibility and enabling us to optimize available supply when conditions allow, helping ensure reliable water service for our customers,” she added.
Operating since 2019, the Cardona WTP provides round-the-clock piped water service to residents of Cardona, Binangonan, Morong, Baras, Jala-Jala, Angono and Taytay in Rizal, as well as parts of Pinagbuhatan in Pasig City.
The plant supplements water from Angat Dam and other facilities, giving Manila Water another source to draw from as dry conditions threaten water availability.
Manila Water said its output also helps ease demand on the company’s wider distribution network serving Metro Manila.
The Cardona facility is equipped with advanced treatment processes, including reverse osmosis capability and a Backwash Water Recovery System that can process six million liters daily.
The company said these systems support the plant’s treatment operations and water recovery.
Manila Water is also pursuing other supply projects, including the nearly completed 200-MLD East Bay Phase 2 Water Supply System and the 220-MLD Kaysakat Water Treatment Plant.
These projects, along with developments involving Laguna Lake and the Upper Wawa watershed, form part of the company’s efforts to expand its sources and maintain service as water conditions change. (PNA)
