Manila Strengthens Disaster Response with AI-Powered Drone Fleet

The City Government of Manila has reinforced its disaster preparedness and emergency response capabilities with the acquisition of three state-of-the-art drones equipped with artificial intelligence and water-resistant features.

The new drone units were formally presented by the Manila Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) Director Arnel Angeles to Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso, underscoring the city’s continuing push to modernize its disaster risk reduction systems and improve operational efficiency during emergencies.

According to city officials, the drones are designed to support a wide range of critical functions, including large-scale mapping, real-time surveillance, and rapid damage assessment before, during, and after calamities. With built-in AI capabilities, the drones can help generate more accurate and data-driven insights, allowing authorities to better identify high-risk areas, assess infrastructure damage, and plan targeted interventions.

Their water-resistant design also enables deployment in challenging weather conditions, particularly during floods, storms, and other climate-related emergencies that frequently affect Manila. This ensures that information gathering and monitoring can continue even in adverse environments, when timely data is most critical.

City leaders emphasized that the drones will be shared across various local government agencies to enhance coordination and improve decision-making. By providing clearer situational awareness, the technology is expected to significantly speed up rescue and relief operations, reduce response times, and help ensure that assistance reaches affected communities more quickly and efficiently.

The acquisition reflects what the city described as the prudent and strategic use of public funds allocated for disaster preparedness. Officials noted that investing in advanced technology not only strengthens immediate emergency response but also supports long-term planning and resilience as Manila continues to face increasing climate and urban risks.

With the addition of these AI-powered drones, the city aims to set a higher standard for proactive disaster management—prioritizing accuracy, speed, and preparedness to better protect lives and property in times of crisis.
