More than 1,000 families in Manila were evacuated over the weekend due to the threat of Super Typhoon Pepito, according to the City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
The evacuees were from Baseco, Parola Compound, and Barangays 101 and 128. They were taken to President Corazon C. Aquino High School and Delpan evacuation centers, where some families slept in hallways as more people arrived late into Sunday night.
In Quezon City, nearly 2,000 residents remained in three evacuation centers. Many evacuees said they had learned from previous storms and preferred to stay in shelters rather than risk being trapped in their flood-prone homes.
One evacuation center reported a shortage of modular tents for the growing number of evacuees.
Pepito, which made landfall in Catanduanes and Aurora before crossing Luzon, caused severe flooding and damage throughout the region.
