MANILA, Philippines — The Manila City government is strengthening its preparedness measures against the possible effects of El Niño, including extreme heat, water shortages, and heat-related illnesses in the coming weeks.
Mayor Francisco “Isko” Moreno Domagoso assured residents during the 55th City Government Directional Meeting that the local government is taking proactive steps to protect public health, safety, and essential services.
Domagoso directed all department heads to ensure their respective offices are equipped to respond promptly to the needs of Manila residents as the city prepares for potentially hotter and drier conditions.
The Manila Health Department was instructed to prepare healthcare facilities, secure sufficient medical supplies, and strengthen early monitoring systems to detect and address illnesses associated with extreme temperatures.
These measures aim to ensure that hospitals and other health facilities can respond effectively to an expected increase in heat-related health concerns.
Meanwhile, the Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Department was tasked with developing contingency measures to address possible water supply shortages resulting from prolonged dry conditions.
The city government is also studying alternative arrangements to minimize class suspensions caused by extreme heat while ensuring that students remain safe and their learning hours are not unnecessarily disrupted.
Officials are assessing measures that would allow educational activities to continue without exposing students and school personnel to excessive heat.
Domagoso emphasized the importance of coordination among city departments to ensure a unified and timely response to potential climate-related challenges.
