The Manila City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (DRRMO) has raised its alert status to Red Alert as of 11:00 a.m. on Monday, July 21, in preparation for the possible impact of the southwest monsoon, or Habagat.

According to the latest advisory from DOST-PAGASA and Manila’s resident meteorologist, the city may experience moderate to heavy rainfall beginning Tuesday, July 22, 2025.

The move follows the directive of Mayor Isko Moreno Domagoso, who urged city officials to ensure full readiness during the rainy season. Under Red Alert status, all emergency units and disaster response personnel are placed on heightened standby to immediately respond to weather-related incidents.

“We are taking this step to ensure the safety of our residents as we anticipate potential flooding, especially in coastal and riverside areas,” the DRRMO said in a statement.

Residents are advised to remain alert, prepare emergency kits, and closely monitor weather updates from official government sources. The public is also reminded to follow instructions from authorities, especially in flood-prone communities.

The Manila City DRRM Council also emphasized the importance of community cooperation during weather disturbances and asked citizens to report any incidents of flooding or emergencies through the city’s hotline numbers.

As the southwest monsoon continues to affect large parts of the country, more local governments are expected to follow suit in raising preparedness levels.
