A moderate earthquake with a magnitude of 4.4 shook the waters off Sultan Kudarat on Wednesday afternoon, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs) said.
Seismologists classified the tremor as tectonic and recorded its occurrence at 1:14 p.m.
The quake’s epicenter was pinpointed 38 kilometers southwest of Kalamansig, at a depth of 15 kilometers below the sea surface.
Residents in nearby areas reported feeling light tremors. The towns of Norala, Surallah, and T’Boli in South Cotabato, as well as Lebak in Sultan Kudarat, registered Instrumental Intensity I.
Authorities assured the public that no casualties or damage to property have been observed so far.
Phivolcs said the likelihood of aftershocks is low but reminded the public that monitoring continues to ensure safety in the region.
Officials urged local communities to remain vigilant and follow established disaster preparedness protocols, emphasizing the importance of readiness in earthquake-prone areas.
