Lingig LGU welcomes PHP40-Million Marine Hatchery project to boost aquaculture

The local government unit of Lingig has welcomed the full implementation of Republic Act 10787, which mandates the creation of a multi-species marine hatchery in the municipality, calling it a major milestone for the town’s aquaculture sector.

According to Municipal Agriculture Officer Ricky Tubo, the newly completed PHP40-million hatchery is expected to produce up to 25 million milkfish fry annually, benefiting more than 2,000 registered fisherfolk in the area.

To support operations, a PHP12-million solar power system was also installed, supplying 60% of the facility’s electricity needs.

“Among the major impacts of the project is its support for our fisherfolk who are into milkfish production through fishponds and cages,” Tubo said, adding that fry sources will now become more accessible with the hatchery’s operation.

The facility, officially turned over by the Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources in Caraga (BFAR-13) on August 28, will be managed by BFAR for the next two years. The agency will also provide technical training and support before transferring management to the LGU.

BFAR-13 Director Omnia Olama said the project is expected to strengthen local aquaculture production, ensure food security, and provide new livelihood opportunities for coastal communities in Surigao del Sur and the entire Caraga region.
