Filipino consumers are becoming more discerning online shoppers, and Lazada Philippines says the first quarter of 2026 made that trend impossible to miss. In its latest Q1 report, the e-commerce platform saw stronger demand for trusted brands, everyday essentials, and digital tools that help buyers make more practical spending decisions, signaling a shift toward more intentional and value-conscious shopping habits.

The strongest signal came during Lazada’s Birthday Sale held from March 24 to 27, which closed the quarter with a notable uplift in both value-driven purchases and AI-assisted shopping. Across the platform, consumers appeared to shop with greater purpose, choosing products that balanced quality, savings, and convenience rather than simply chasing one-off deals.

LazMall continued to stand out as a major growth engine, as more Filipinos turned to official brand stores for guaranteed authentic products. During the Birthday Sale, LazMall recorded up to four times gross merchandise value growth versus business-as-usual levels, showing how strongly consumers now associate the platform with reliability and peace of mind.

International brands also helped power the quarter’s momentum. During the 3.3 Sale, sportswear names such as Adidas, Puma, and Anta posted up to three times GMV growth, while the Birthday Sale delivered a 2.5-times increase in orders and a 3.5-times increase in GMV for global brand stores. The performance reflected Filipino shoppers’ growing appetite for both premium and trusted labels, particularly in categories such as beauty, fashion, electronics, and sportswear.

But while aspirational purchases remained strong, practical buying continued to anchor shopping behavior. LazMart emerged as one of the quarter’s top-performing segments, driven by demand for grocery bundles, household staples, and value packs. During the Birthday Sale alone, LazMart posted up to three times GMV growth against business-as-usual, while voucher and discount usage jumped fourfold. Brands such as Bear Brand, Birch Tree, and SPAM® saw particularly strong demand as households used e-commerce to plan bulk purchases and stretch their budgets further.

This reflects the rise of a more strategic kind of online consumption, one that Lazada describes as “smart basket building.” Instead of buying on impulse, more Filipinos are using online platforms to stock up efficiently, compare choices carefully, and maximize every peso spent.

Technology is becoming a bigger part of that behavior as well. Lazada reported that its AI assistant Lazzie and other in-app features helped drive nearly US$3 million in GMV regionally during the Birthday Sale, as shoppers used personalized recommendations, voucher discovery tools, and real-time support to find the right products faster and with more confidence. The growing engagement suggests that consumers are no longer just open to AI-powered shopping features—they are beginning to rely on them.

For Lazada, the quarter’s results point to a broader evolution in the market. Filipino shoppers are no longer simply buying more online; they are buying better, with clearer priorities and sharper decision-making. That shift is also opening up more opportunities for brands and sellers, especially with Lazada continuing to expand its campaign ecosystem, logistics network, and in-app engagement tools. The platform said it welcomed up to 5,000 new arrivals in March alone, reflecting strong participation from both local and international partners.

Lazada Philippines CEO Carlos Barrera said the company’s Q1 performance reflects the emergence of a new kind of shopper—one who is intentional, value-conscious, and increasingly confident in choosing both authentic brands and daily essentials online. As Lazada moves deeper into 2026, it is betting that this smarter, more deliberate approach to shopping will continue to define the next phase of e-commerce growth in the Philippines.
