Laure, Rondina power Flying Titans to victory

MANILA – Choco Mucho clawed back from two sets down to beat Capital1, 22-25, 18-25, 25-17, 25-20, 15-8, in the opening of the Premier Volleyball League (PVL) Season 10 at SM Seaside Cebu Arena on Saturday.

Eya Laure led the Flying Titans with 22 points, 11 excellent digs and 15 receptions, leading to the first Best Player of the Game award of the Siklab Series, the opening conference of the PVL’s three-conference season organized by Sports Vision.

“We worked really hard for this win, and we knew we had to earn it. We kept reminding one another that we had each other’s backs. No matter what happened, we had to keep fighting and trust the process,” Laure, who delivered the points in the fourth set and the decider, said.

Cebu native Sisi Rondina, a University of Santo Tomas alumna like Laure, also unleashed a series of powerful attacks, finishing with 12 points, while middle blocker Maddie Madayag added 11.

Katrina Tolentino contributed eight points followed by Caitlin Viray with six points, while Lorene Toring and Jewel Encarnacion had five each.

“They accepted my challenge after the second set. I really channeled my anger toward them. I told them, I don’t care if you’re skilled. What I need is a team that wants to win,” Choco Mucho coach Dante Alinsunurin said after the 73-minute match.

“They were likely challenged, which is why I am so grateful for their response. But I hope this isn’t just for now. I hope they can do even more in our next game.”

Erika Mae Santos paced the Solar Spikers with 22 points — 20 on attacks.

Michaela Belen scored 15 points on 13 attacks and two blocks, along with 10 digs and 15 excellent receptions.

Vanessa Gandler also had 15 points, including two blocks and two aces.
