The Los Angeles Lakers’ hot streak following the blockbuster Luka Dončić acquisition has suddenly cooled off. After falling to the Boston Celtics over the weekend, the Lakers stumbled again on Monday night, dropping a narrow 111-108 decision against the Brooklyn Nets.
With LeBron James sidelined due to a groin strain expected to keep him out for up to two weeks, Dončić carried the load for Los Angeles. The All-Star guard delivered a triple-double, capped off by a clutch three-pointer in the final moments to keep the Lakers in contention.
However, his late-game brilliance wasn’t enough to secure a victory against a struggling Nets squad sitting near the bottom of the Eastern Conference standings.
Fast start fizzles as Nets take control
The Lakers initially appeared unfazed by James’ absence, surging to an early 31-16 advantage in the second quarter. However, Brooklyn responded with a determined push, overtaking Los Angeles by halftime with a 48-47 lead. The game remained a seesaw battle from there, but the Lakers could not reclaim control when it mattered most.
The Nets created some separation late in the fourth quarter, establishing a 106-100 lead with under a minute to play. Ziaire Williams’ timely bucket for Brooklyn extended the gap to five points with just over 13 seconds remaining, seemingly sealing the game.
Dončić momentarily reignited hope for the Lakers with a deep three-pointer from 35 feet, trimming the deficit to just two with 9.1 seconds left. But on the ensuing Nets possession, the Lakers’ defense broke down, allowing Noah Clowney to slip through for an uncontested dunk. That pivotal lapse effectively dashed any late-game comeback aspirations.
Lakers struggle on the glass, shooting woes persist
Dončić ended the contest with 22 points, 12 rebounds, and 12 assists, securing his second triple-double in 12 games since joining the Lakers. However, he struggled with efficiency, connecting on just 8-of-26 attempts from the field.
Austin Reaves contributed across the board, tallying 17 points, 10 assists, and eight rebounds, though he also endured a difficult shooting night, making just 3-of-14 shots. Meanwhile, Gabe Vincent led the Lakers in scoring with 24 points on an impressive 8-of-12 shooting performance, stepping up in a starting role.
Rookie Dalton Knecht added 19 points on 8-of-18 shooting in his 13th career start while starting center Alex Len played just 13 scoreless minutes as the Lakers were outrebounded 47-43, including a costly 16-8 deficit on the offensive glass.
The Nets benefitted from a well-rounded offensive effort, with Clowney leading off the bench with 19 points and five rebounds. Cam Johnson and Keon Johnson each contributed 18 points, helping Brooklyn improve to 22-42 on the season.
Western Conference playoff race tightens
The Lakers, who had won nine of their previous 11 games—including an eight-game win streak—have now dropped two straight, falling to 40-23 on the season. As Los Angeles faltered, the Denver Nuggets capitalized, defeating the Oklahoma City Thunder to move to 42-23, edging past the Lakers for second place in the Western Conference.
Despite the recent losses, the Thunder remain comfortably atop the standings with a commanding 11-game lead. The second-place battle is heating up as the season enters its critical final stretch, with teams jockeying for the best possible playoff positioning and home-court advantage in the later rounds.
