A newly refurbished runway at Laguindingan International Airport is set to enhance the travel experience for thousands of passengers flying in and out of Northern Mindanao, as infrastructure upgrades led by Aboitiz InfraCapital, Inc. (AIC) strengthen safety and operational reliability at one of the country’s busiest regional gateways.
AIC, the infrastructure arm of the Aboitiz Group, recently completed a series of runway improvements designed to maintain optimal surface conditions and support more dependable flight operations at the Misamis Oriental airport. The works form part of the company’s ongoing commitment to improving critical airside infrastructure as passenger traffic continues to grow.
The maintenance program covered several technical upgrades, including runway repainting, detailed inspections, rubber deposit removal, and repairs to surface cracks. These measures are essential in ensuring that aircraft can take off and land safely while maintaining the efficiency of daily airport operations.
“As the operator of Laguindingan International Airport, we take a proactive approach to maintaining and improving critical airside infrastructure. These runway enhancements reflect our ongoing responsibility to ensure that the airport remains capable of supporting current operations while preparing for future demand,” said AIC Vice President and Head of Airports Rafael M. Aboitiz.
The rehabilitation works were conducted in close coordination with aviation regulators to ensure compliance with national safety and operational standards while minimizing disruption to flights and airport activities.
Civil Aviation Authority of the Philippines Director-General Lieutenant-General Raul L. Del Rosario, AFP (Ret.), emphasized the importance of continuous collaboration between airport operators and regulators in maintaining safe and efficient facilities.
“Sustaining airport infrastructure is an ongoing process that relies on cooperation between regulators and airport operators. Continued coordination across stakeholders helps ensure that facilities like Laguindingan International Airport remain well-maintained and capable of supporting the region’s growing connectivity needs,” Del Rosario said.
For travelers, the improvements translate into smoother takeoffs and landings, enhanced operational reliability, and more consistent airport services. These upgrades also strengthen the airport’s ability to handle increasing passenger and cargo traffic as Northern Mindanao continues to expand economically.
Laguindingan International Airport serves as a vital gateway to the region, supporting tourism, business travel, and logistics links that connect Mindanao to major domestic destinations.
The runway upgrades are also part of AIC Airports’ broader strategy to develop and modernize its growing network of aviation hubs across the Philippines. In addition to Laguindingan, the company operates and develops Mactan-Cebu International Airport, a key gateway for international tourism and regional travel, as well as Bohol-Panglao International Airport, which serves as the primary access point to Bohol’s globally recognized natural attractions and UNESCO Global Geopark sites.
Under concession agreements awarded by the government in 2024, AIC Airports began a multi-year transformation program in 2025 to modernize both Laguindingan International Airport and Bohol-Panglao International Airport. The initiative aims to upgrade facilities, improve operational efficiency, and elevate passenger experience over the short to medium term.
Through these public-private partnerships, AIC Airports seeks to strengthen domestic and regional connectivity, support tourism growth, and facilitate the efficient movement of people and goods across the country.
Together, the airports under the AIC network have served around 16 million passengers by the end of 2025, accounting for more than 20 percent of the Philippines’ total passenger traffic. With continued modernization efforts underway, the company aims to help position Philippine airports as globally competitive gateways that connect people, places, and opportunities.
