Korea Electric Power Company (KEPCO) is reinforcing its commitment to the Philippine energy sector, exploring potential investments in renewable energy (RE), nuclear energy, and smart grid technology.

In a statement released Thursday, the Department of Energy (DOE) revealed that KEPCO President Kim Dong-cheol paid a courtesy visit to Energy Secretary Raphael Lotilla on February 25. During their meeting, Kim reaffirmed KEPCO’s interest in contributing to the country’s energy landscape through advanced energy solutions.

The discussions focused on expanding RE projects, introducing nuclear energy initiatives, and integrating Korea’s cutting-edge smart grid technology into the Philippine power system.

“We welcome KEPCO’s continued commitment to the Philippine energy sector, particularly in advancing renewable energy, smart grid technology, and nuclear energy cooperation,” said Lotilla.

Kim highlighted Korea’s highly stable power grid, which benefits from minimal transmission and distribution losses and boasts a low rate of power outages. He credited this efficiency to Korea’s intelligent digital power (IDP) management system, which utilizes artificial intelligence (AI) to optimize grid operations, enhance efficiency, and quickly detect and resolve potential issues.

Acknowledging KEPCO’s expertise, Lotilla expressed appreciation for its willingness to share best practices that could improve the reliability and efficiency of the Philippine power grid.

KEPCO’s continued interest in the Philippines aligns with the government’s push for energy security and sustainability. Lotilla emphasized the importance of such collaborations in building a cleaner, more resilient, and technology-driven energy future for the country.

In line with its long-term sustainability goals, KEPCO previously announced in 2023 that it was divesting from coal assets in the Philippines as part of its broader commitment to achieving carbon neutrality by 2050.
