Kanlaon Volcano records 8 quakes, maintains alert level 3

Eight volcanic tremors were recorded at Kanlaon Volcano in the Visayas Region on Saturday, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (PHIVOLCS).

The agency’s bulletin, released on Sunday, noted that the seismic activity took place between midnight Saturday and Sunday.

During this period, the volcano emitted 1,611 tonnes of sulfur dioxide and displayed moderate plumes reaching up to 100 meters. These plumes drifted west-southwest and westward.

PHIVOLCS also observed continuous degassing and occasional ash emissions from the volcano.

The alert level at Kanlaon Volcano remains at Level 3, indicating intensified magmatic unrest. This level is associated with potential hazards such as sudden explosive eruptions, lava flow, ashfall, pyroclastic density currents (PDC), rockfall, and lahars during heavy rainfall.

Kanlaon, which sits between Negros Occidental and Negros Oriental, is currently experiencing an inflated edifice, a sign of ongoing volcanic activity.

Authorities have emphasized that the six-kilometer radius surrounding the summit should remain off-limits, and aircraft should avoid flying close to the volcano.

The eruption on December 9 last year led PHIVOLCS to raise the alert level from 2 to 3, and Negros Oriental has since declared a state of calamity due to the eruption’s impacts.
