But for seven-time MVP June Mar Fajardo, this isn’t just another early-season clash. It’s the game that will reveal who is truly built to contend.
Fajardo believes the Road Warriors’ remarkable turnaround under first-year PBA head coach Jimmy Alapag is no accident.
The San Miguel superstar has seen Alapag’s leadership up close, long before the former PBA legend made waves on the sidelines. They shared the floor as teammates for Gilas Pilipinas during its historic runner-up finish in the 2013 FIBA Asia Championship before representing the country together at the 2014 FIBA World Cup in Spain.
Years later, they reunited inside the San Miguel organization when Alapag joined the Beermen’s coaching staff, giving Fajardo an even closer look at the basketball mind that is now transforming NLEX.
That experience convinced Fajardo that Alapag was destined to become a successful head coach.
According to the Beermen center, Alapag had always been a natural leader who commanded respect, making his smooth transition from player to coach anything but surprising.
Alapag further sharpened his basketball knowledge during his stint as a player development coach with the NBA’s Sacramento Kings before returning to the Philippines to take over NLEX. The impact has been immediate, with the Road Warriors opening the conference undefeated while displaying renewed confidence, discipline, and defensive intensity.
But Sunday presents a completely different challenge.
Standing in NLEX’s path is a San Miguel squad that has dominated the league for years behind Fajardo’s brilliance and championship pedigree. While the Road Warriors have impressed with their fresh system, the Beermen remain the measuring stick every contender must overcome.
Ironically, Fajardo believes the pressure is mutual.
Rather than looking at NLEX as an underdog, the veteran big man sees the Road Warriors as a legitimate threat capable of testing San Miguel’s own championship credentials. He pointed to Alapag’s vast experience—including his NBA coaching exposure—as one reason the Beermen cannot afford to take the matchup lightly.
