For Josh Ybañez, stepping onto the court at the FIVB Men’s Volleyball World Championship 2025 is more than just about competition—it’s about growth, resilience, and representing the Philippines on the global stage.

The 5-foot-7 standout from General Santos City, one of 21 players in the Alas Pilipinas pool, is determined to make the most of his first World Championship appearance from September 12 to 28 at the SM Mall of Asia Arena and Smart-Araneta Coliseum.

“I will just focus on doing my best in every game and learning from each match. That’s the only way I can grow,” the 22-year-old said in a statement released by the Philippine National Volleyball Federation (PNVF).

A two-time UAAP champion with the University of Santo Tomas, Ybañez knows the weight of expectation. As an outside hitter turned defensive anchor under Italian coach Angiolino Frigoni, he thrives under pressure.

“Pressure is constant. It’s always there, even if it’s not the World Championship. So, I just embrace it and focus on loving what I do,” said Ybañez, who was named Best Libero in the SEA V.League.

Representing the Philippines for the first time in the World Championship, Ybañez considers the moment both historic and humbling.

“It’s an honor for us to represent the Philippines for the first time at the World Championship. I’m happy, and for sure, I’m going to learn so much from our opponents and from the tournament itself,” he said.

The Philippines opens its campaign against Tunisia on September 12 at 4:30 p.m. at the MOA Arena, following a star-studded opening ceremony featuring K-pop group BOYNEXTDOOR and Cebuana singer-songwriter-actress Karencitta. Alas Pilipinas will then battle Egypt on September 16 and Iran on September 18.

Ybañez hopes the home crowd will rally behind the team.

“I hope all Filipinos will support us. Of course, there are teams like the USA that are also favorites among fans, but I hope our kababayans cheer for us too,” he said.
