Rising padel star and lawyer Jessica Agra is set to spearhead the Philippines’ campaign in the highly anticipated FIP Asia Padel Cup happening in Doha, Qatar from October 17 to 24.
Agra, who recently climbed to No. 145 in the International Padel Federation (FIP) world rankings—the highest ever for a Filipino—earned her stripes by competing in back-to-back international tournaments in Asia this July.
She reached the quarterfinals of the FIP Silver tournament in Chengdu, China (July 2–6) alongside Japan’s Yoshino Kushima, before partnering with Spain’s Maria Mayoral Estrada in the FIP Bronze event in Tokyo (July 9–13), where they advanced to the semifinals. Though they bowed to eventual champions Rosalie Van Der Hoek of the Netherlands and Mexico’s Camila Ramme Coellar in straight sets, Agra’s performance solidified her standing as a formidable force on the court.
Joining Agra in the Philippine delegation is German Streitenberger of Argentina, who has been tapped as team coach. Timothy Alonso Berry will lead the men’s squad as team captain.
“The Philippine team is entering the FIP Asia Cup stronger and more prepared than ever,” said Philippine Padel Association (PPA) founder Alenna Dawn Magpantay. “Our women’s team made a huge impact last year by finishing in the Top 3 out of more than 20 Asian countries. This year, they go straight into the main draw, and we’re confident they can defend that position—or climb even higher.”
Magpantay also highlighted the men’s team’s progress. “We have a promising blend of veterans and emerging talents who have undergone rigorous technical and performance training. There’s a lot to look forward to.”
The FIP Asia Padel Cup is not just a major sporting event—it’s a symbol of padel’s rapid growth across the continent. With Qatar hosting the tournament for yet another year, the Gulf nation continues to solidify its status as a global epicenter for the sport.
“These continental competitions are more than just matches—they’re a celebration of national pride and the core values of sport: unity, fair play, loyalty, and community,” said FIP President Luigi Carraro in a statement. “Doha holds a special place in padel history. It’s where the sport found its international voice, and it’s from here that we will continue our journey toward new heights.”
Carraro extended his gratitude to the Qatar Tennis, Squash and Badminton Federation (QTF), as well as to Padel Asia and its president, Tareq Zainal, for their commitment to growing the sport on a global scale.
Zainal, who also serves as tournament director, echoed this sentiment.
“Hosting the FIP Asia Padel Cup is not just an honor—it’s a moment of pride for Qatar and for all of Asia,” he said. “This tournament goes beyond the scoreboard. It celebrates ambition, growth, and the power of sport to unite nations. Doha has embraced padel with passion, and we are proud to see our shared vision taking shape on such a grand stage.”
As the countdown begins for the region’s premier padel showdown, all eyes are on Team Philippines—especially Jessica Agra—as they aim to make history and elevate the country’s status in the global padel arena.
