TOKYO – Japan is considering providing financial assistance to the International Criminal Court (ICC) amid sanctions imposed by the administration of US President Donald Trump, a senior Japanese government official said Wednesday.
Chief Cabinet Secretary Minoru Kihara said Tokyo is examining possible financial measures to support the international tribunal while maintaining consultations with ICC President Tomoko Akane and other concerned countries.
Akane, a Japanese national, strongly criticized the US sanctions in the ICC’s annual report presented to the United Nations on Monday.
During a press conference, Kihara reaffirmed Japan’s commitment to supporting the court and its role in upholding international law.
“We will continue to support the ICC to ensure the rule of law is upheld,” Kihara said.
The Japanese government has yet to announce the amount or specific form of assistance it may provide.
The proposed financial support comes as the ICC faces pressure from Washington over sanctions targeting the international judicial institution.
